DIAMONDS VS MOISSANITE

DIAMONDS

  • Diamonds are composed of carbon, formed deep within the Earth's mantle under high pressure and temperature. They are natural minerals.

  • Diamonds are the hardest known natural material, ranking 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness. This means they are extremely resistant to scratches and damage.

  • Diamonds are known for their exceptional brilliance, which is a combination of their ability to refract light and reflect it back to the viewer's eye.

  • Diamonds come in a range of colours, with white or colourless diamonds being the most prized. Coloured diamonds, often referred to as fancy colour diamonds, can be rare and valuable.

  • Diamonds are generally more expensive than moissanite due to their rarity and the demand for them in the jewelry market. The price of diamonds can vary significantly based on factors like size, cut, colour, and clarity.

  • Diamond mining can have ethical concerns related to environmental impact and labour practices in some regions. Conflict diamonds, also known as blood diamonds, have been associated with funding conflicts in certain parts of the world.

  • Diamonds have a unique luster that is often described as a "metallic" shine.

MOISSANITE

  • Moissanite, on the other hand, is composed of silicon carbide. It was originally discovered in a meteor crater but is now synthesized for use in jewelry.

  • Moissanite is also quite hard, ranking 9.25 on the Mohs scale. While not as hard as diamonds, moissanite is still highly scratch-resistant.

  • Moissanite has even higher refractive properties than diamonds, which means it can exhibit more "fire" or spectral flashes of colour. Some people prefer the intense fire of moissanite.

  • Moissanite is typically coloruless or near-colourless. Generally, moissanite tends to exhibit less colour than lower-grade diamonds.

  • Moissanite is generally more affordable than diamonds of similar size and appearance due to its lab-created nature and greater availability.

  • Moissanite is a lab-created gemstone, so there are no ethical concerns related to mining. However, the environmental impact of moissanite production can vary based on the energy sources used in the synthesis process.

  • Moissanite's high refractive index gives it an intense "disco ball" effect, dispersing light into colourful flashes.

PREFERENCE

Ultimately, the choice between diamonds and moissanite depends on personal preferences, budget considerations, and ethical concerns. Both gemstones have their own unique qualities and can make stunning pieces of jewelry.
